Carrington and Tanning were both in romantic partnerships with Ernst. They also share thematic elements such as magical realism/female-centric eroticism and feminist beliefs. Later on in life they both split from Surrealism, and both lived in southwest North America (Mexico for Carrington, Arizona for Tanning)
