A ciborium is used during a Catholic mass to hold the consecrated wafers for the Eucharist. Because the interior of the ciborium comes into contact with the wafers it is often gilded. Van der Laan’s design is lower than normal and does not have a lid: it is a modern shape that, according to Van der Laan, has greater immediacy.
