Portrait of a Man with One Eye
Vincent van Gogh was admitted to an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the autumn of 1889. The man in this painting is one of the few fellow patients whom Vincent portrayed. It is really a study in blue and green. The colour of the eye recurs in the background, as well as in the blue jacket. The cigarette’s glowing tip affords a red ‘counterpoint’.
