Garden with Butterflies
This close-up displays Van Gogh’s intensive examination of nature. He made several other similar detailed views in the garden of the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Upon closer inspection, the soft, vernal green of the plants appears to consist of a profusion of green, yellow, orange-brown, grey, and black tints. The cabbage white butterflies stand out subtly against that green, unlike Van Gogh’s usual powerful colour contrasts.
