38 Winged Insects
In the Middle Ages insects were hardly the subject of serious attention. This changed however in the 16th and 17th century when artists began to develop an eye for the beauty of these tiny creatures. According to them, the greatness of God’s creation was manifest in the smallest of all. De Boodt drew 38 different winged insects, including bees, wasps, flies, and midges with minute precision.
