Louis de Bourbon, Dauphin of France
Almost certainly made during Liotard’s successful campaign of portraiture at Versailles, this pastel is one of the many replicas of commissioned portraits of distinguished persons he kept for himself. Despite the insignia of the Order of the Saint-Esprit, it is an unusually informal presentation of the French crown prince, eldest son of Louis XV and father of Louis XVI.
