Queen of Kandy
Figures of the King and Queen of Kandy.
Ivory figurines of the kings of Sri Lanka and Southern India were made from the 16th century, possibly as a kind of propaganda to glorify the ruler. They were also presented to foreign rulers as diplomatic gifts. These two later sculptures probably do not portray a specific individual, but rather a king in a general sense. They may have served as keepsakes for western visitors.
