Tile panel with a Chinese landscape
This tile panel was probably part of a wall covering in a room in a palace. The decoration is remarkably bold. The figure of Guanyin (a Buddhist deity) at the upper right is based directly on a Chinese woodcut. The striking black figures represent Brazilian Indians and were added to make the scene more exotic.
