Eggleston was a pioneer of colour photography in a time when colour was used almost exclusively for commercial work, rather than for documentary and artistic purposes. He usually shot mundane subjects, as in this photograph, in such a way that colour became the actual subject. A Southerner in heart and soul, Eggleston travelled throughout Louisiana recording the most basic situations – dilapidated houses, walls, streets – in complex compositions for The Louisiana Project.
