Redingote with openwork puffed sleeves
Redingotes came into fashion in the 1780s. This name is a French corruption of the English ‘riding coat’, which originated as a man’s fitted coat. Redingotes remained popular up to the 1820s. To underscore their masculine character, they were often decorated with military style ornamental braiding (brandebourgs), or frogs.
