Flounce of Needle Lace with a Man and a Sceptre Flanked by Crowns
Italy and the Southern Netherlands were long the leading centres of lacemaking, until in the course of the 17th century Louis XIV stimulated the French lace industry for economic reasons. This band of point de France, French needle lace, was inspired by prints by Jean Bérain the Elder. The little figure with a sceptre under a baldachin may portray Louis himself.
