Jupiter and Juno
Hurdter was a pupil of the celebrated ivory carver David Heschler. He copied this composition, with the mythological divine couple Jupiter (identifiable from the eagle with the lightning bolt in its claw) and Juno, from a ceremonial ivory tankard by his master. He translated Heschler’s flat relief into a freestanding group.
