René Daniëls was trained in the Department of Free Graphic Design at the Academy in Den Bosch from 1972 to 1976, during which time he made this series of drawings on etchings. His teacher Sipke Huismans (1938) encouraged students to play freely with images, including ones of everyday life. By lifting them out of their context, seriousness and solemnity could make way for wonder.
