Portrait of Georgette and Yvonne Apol

In his photography book Achter glas (1957), the then still only 19-year-old photographer and later filmmaker Van der Keuken sketched the life of two sisters in his Amsterdam circle of friends in the 1950s. He was actually married briefly to Yvonne, at the right in the photograph. He introduced the women with this pensive double portrait, moving in on them at close range to create a poetic and personal image.
