Starving Children of the Holvast Family

Clandestine photographs by members of the resistance group De Ondergedoken Camera (The Underground Camera) were printed in Meijboom’s photo studio on the Keizersgracht, and exhibited one month after the Liberation. This one of starving children is part of a series Meijboom made in the upstairs flat of the Holvast family in the Tuinstraat in the Jordaan district. The boy in the middle is Henkie Holvast. He came to symbolize the suffering of children in wartime.
