Screen with Dancing Figures
This screen has an interesting genesis. When Maris saw it at an art gallery in Paris he immediately knew how he would refashion it. He cut away the original fabric and stretched new canvas over the frames. He then painted nymphs on this new support. The art dealer Cottier subsequently sold the nymphs as four independent paintings. In 1914 the Canadian collector William van Horne reunited these panels to form a screen.
