Osier-Peeling

Emerson published his photo book Pictures of East Anglian Life in 1888. This photograph of girls peeling bark from willow branches exemplifies his desire to realistically portray the lives of rural folk. Emerson tried not to stage his shots, preferring to simply document what he saw, as he wrote in the manual Naturalistic Photography for Students of Art of 1889.
