The Lombok treasure
The Lombok treasure – 230 kilos of gold, 7000 kilos of silver and countless jewels and precious stones – was taken as war booty in 1894 from the palace on the island of Lombok. There the native Islamic Sasaks were rebelling against the ruling Balinese Hindus. They enlisted the help of the Dutch government, who used the events to increase their sphere of influence in the area. The majority of the treasure was returned to Indonesia in 1977.
