Tankard
Initially the workers at Meissen were barely capable of decorating porcelain. Undecorated porcelain objects were thus sent to Augsburg – 500 kilometres away! – where specialized Hausmaler (independent painters) applied gold ornamentation to them. This type of gold chinoiserie decoration is called Goldchinesen. The gold has been worked with an agate burin to give the scenes greater depth.
