The German-born naturalist Georg Rumphius spent most of his life on the Mollucan island of Ambon. There he initially systematically studied and catalogued the indigenous medicinal plants. Later he described in great detail the native shells and stones. His book on this, Rariteitkamer (Cabinet of Curiosities), only appeared three years after his death, in 1705. Jan Goeree made the illustrations.
