Cornelis de Graeff and Catharina Hooft
Mayor Cornelis de Graeff, one of the driving forces behind the construction of the new Amsterdam Town
Hall, is portrayed in profile together with his wife, Catharina Hooft. The unusual format recalls Roman coins. The Classical orientation is also conveyed through the choice of material (marble), as well as the Latin inscription, which gives De Graeff’s title as ‘consul’.
