Poke bonnet (capote)
The first poke bonnets, or capotes, made their appearance around 1805 and remained in fashion until around 1815. The broad brim, which framed the wearer’s face and straight hairstyle, severely restricted her field of vision. She had to turn her head in order to look sideways.
