Portrait of George IV, King of England
George was prince regent from 1811 and king of England from 1820 until his death in 1830. He had himself portrayed by Lawrence a number of times. The ruler was anything but an easy sitter: he suffered from obesity as a result of his excessive lifestyle. Lawrence thus had to steer a course between credibility and fawning. His critics felt that he flattered the king too much.
