Chalice
As was the case with secular objects, the ornamentation of ecclesiastical objects was subject to fashion. Because a chalice is part of a priest’s personal accoutrements, he could dictate how it was decorated. A relatively reserved ornamentation with fluting was particularly popular in the 16th century. The silver flutes reflect the light in all directions.
