Cup honouring the captaincy of Jan Berewout Jan Lanckhorst (1668–1742)
This cup contains references to war and peace. Stories from Classical antiquity are combined with the freestanding allegorical figures of Prudentia (prudence) and Mars (power). The showpiece was commissioned by one of the sixty Amsterdam civic guard companies. Its exceptionally splendid execution speaks volumes about the competition among the militia companies.
