Jizo bodhisattva
Jizo is a saviour of souls. He is a bodhisattva, an enlightened being who has postponed his own salvation to assist humankind.
Although the figure’s gentle face is stylised, there is a degree of realism in the body’s attitude with some tension in the shoulder of the raised left arm. This lifelike element was introduced into Japanese sculpture around 1200.
