Following Napoleon Bonaparte’s appointment as the ‘First Consul’ of France on 10 November 1799, fashion, under his influence, was increasingly dominated by Classical antiquity. This fan is a good example, with its gilt copper punched decorations of sheaves of arrows and stacked foliate and floral ornaments.
