Portrait of William Howley, Archbishop of Canterbury
The print is after a painting of 1816, when Howley was still bishop of London. It was made towards the end of Howley’s episcopate as archbishop of Canterbury (1828-1848). The engraver is thus guilty of a mild form of historical falsification by presenting Howley as a man in his 50s, while he was then at least 30 years older.
