Coat (douillette)

This padded coat has two striking features: a pelerine (wide collar) and sleeves. It is one of several types of douillette that were worn around 1850. The fabric, known as moiré silk, is also referred to as watered silk. The effect is achieved through a number of finishes whereby the pattern is printed into the fabric with a roller.
