Carrying cloth (tralla)

Handspun white cotton, plain weave with cross bands of multi-coloured brocading in commercial yarn, forming geometrical motifs. Cloth consists of two four-selvage webs and is stitched toge­ther at one short and one long side, latter has an opening producing an arm hole. At one end the long side has red and purple warp stripes. Used by women in Mechoacán and Tetepec, Oax., in the following way: the right arm is inserted in the armhole and the garment pulled across the back and held to cover the chest, whereby a carrying pocket is formed.
