Feestlaarzen voor een vrouw

Boots made from ringed-seal skin. The fur is removed from the outer boots and thereafter dyed red. The top of each boot consists of a broad horizontal white band, beneath which is a pattern made up of small pieces of sealskin, or avitat, sewn onto the boot, and coloured red, blue, green and black. A similar but vertical strip of avitat runs up the front of the boot, from the toe to the horizontal pattern just described, but this time including yellow among its colours. This central vertical strip is characteristic of women's boots. The leg is sewn to the sole --- made from bearded-seal skin --- with an overlapping white strip added to the jointure between them. The uppermost parts of the inner boots, made from black-dyed fur, project above the tops of the outer boots. The process of blackening the hide is undertaken in Denmark, the skins being returned dyed to Greenland, which for this reason are very expensive. Such boots are worn on (national) feast days and combined with a (festive) frock or skirt.
