Amulets and talismans are an important part of everyday life in the Middle East and Central Asia. Although the official Islam initially opposed it, wearing amulets was and is widespread and condoned. A goldsmith makes the amulet holder, but the amulet itself is made by a specialist who knows which texts or magic symbols deliver the desired result. That can be a prayer leader or a wise man who has a great knowledge of God, the Koran and the Hadith, the statements and actions ascribed to the Muhammad. He is regarded as an intermediary between God and the people.
