Foundi

A woman’s sleeveless dress (foundi), ankle length with a long, vertical centre front neck opening with a small stand up collar that closes with a button. It is part of the bridal attire, worn in the villages around Athens in the Attica region in the 19th and early 20th century. Foundi dress was particularly found among the Arvanites, an Albanian ethnic group from the North who settled in Greece in the late medieval period. They constituted the dominant ethnic group until the 19th century. Made from natural cream tabby woven cotton cloth; hand spun, woven and stitched. The deep border at the hem is covered with embroidery: red/orange, green (two tones), blue (two tones), maroon and black silk embroidery. The border has four registers: lowest (hem, a band of linked squares?, the lower middle alternates stylised tree-shape forms and saint julian cross/ x-shape motifs, the upper middle is composed by alternating upside down and right side up stylised tree motifs within triangles, the upper band only has right side up tree-shape motifs.
