A calligrapher, a master of calligraphy, has traditionally been a highly rated artist in the Islamic culture area. The script can be divided into two categories: the monumental Kufic and the running cursive script. Calligraphy is considered the highest form of art in the Islamic world. Moreover, it is the main instrument with which to express religion. Script is the bearer of the word of God as laid down in the Koran. Calligraphy expresses more than the literal meaning of the text. Breathing regularly and by means of an utmost concentration a calligrapher can fully control his body and mind allowing his hands to write. This requires many years of exercise. Calligraphers must, even now, become proficient in six classic styles of the Arabic script.
