Patroon

A pattern for decorating mats, which were used on the (sleeping) benches. They are made from several layers of birch bark. Mats for covering the sleeping benches were made of reed or of birch bark. They were decorated by cutting out motifs through several layers of the bark. These motifs were often made of separate pieces of birch bark, which were then fixed to the article being produced. The patterns were made by women, and were passed down from mother to daughter as objects of value. Girls who were expert at making garments, patterns and artistically finished articles made of birch bark, had a greater chance of a good marriage, and of being admired.
