Model of a plait of man's hair, woven from grass. It is tied at the top with a strip of green cotton, and at the bottom with red-and-white ribbon. The Nivkh and Oroch were reluctant to cut their hair: they always had to leave a long lock, so that the spirits could pull the dead owner into the upper world of 'life after death'.
