Een paar laarzen

A pair of boots made of reindeer skin. The toes are pointed, which may indicate Manchurian influence. The boots were fastened round the ankles with leather straps. The legs are made from depilitated reindeer skin processed into 'shammy' leather, while the sole is made of depilitated sealskin. The boots were sewn with thread made from reindeer or seal sinew. These are winter boots, and their type suggests that they were meant for wear within the settlement, or in the house. We do not know if they were made for men or women. Footwear of this kind originated with the Nivkh. Since the second half of the twentieth century, clothing of Russian and European manufacture has been worn. Where traditional clothing of the Amur peoples is concerned, it was indigenous footwear that survived the longest, and this can still be seen in use among old people. However, more modern kinds of fur boots are now made, with rubber soles and linings of felt or synthetic materials.
