A pair of inner boots (or stockings) made of depilitated reindeer skin (suede). Leather straps were used to fasten them round the ankles. The cut of this item of clothing shows Manchurian influence. The boots were worn in summer for work in the house, and as inner boots inside others meant for outside wear. Women removed the hair from reindeer skin, and worked it into suppleness. The lacing of the boots on the top edge, and the length of the soles, suggests that they were meant for a man. Boots made for men were stronger than women's boots, since they had to be equipped for use in the snow, outside the settlement. Inner boots (or stockings) of this kind may have been worn in summer. In wintertime, men also wore stockings made of dog fur inside outer boots of seal leather or sealskin. Women wore boots made of seal leather with cotton tops. Some kinds of boot were still being worn in the second half of the twentieth century.
