Een paar kousen

A pair of stockings, or inner boots, made of the skin of the musk rat. The upper edge is finished with cotton. When washed and dried, the skin of the musk rat is rendered completely smooth and supple, suitable for sewing to make socks. The boots consist of various parts: a) the sole, made from one piece of skin; b) the left side of the leg; c)the right side of the leg; d) a decorative strip of coloured cotton along the top edge. The items shown here display signs of use. In one of the stockings the toe is hardened, probably from oil or fat (seal fat, for instance) soaking into it. A hole in the heel of the other stocking has been repaired with a small piece of leather. Stockings like the ones shown here were probably worn in summer. In winter, stockings made of dog fur were worn inside outer boots of seal leather or fur. Women wore boots made of seal leather, with cotton tops. Some types of locally made boots were still being worn into the second half of the twentieth century.
