Dress

According to the inventory, this item of clothing is a man's night shirt, made from reindeer skin with the hair removed ('shammy' leather). Men, women and children all wore garments of this kind in the home. It fastens from left to right, with a wide band of black cotton, and narrower bands in yellow, white and pink. The buttons were obtained from sailors; some of them bear the legend "Royal Marines, Light Infantry" or "Beste Qualitaet". They may also have been obtained through trade with neighbouring populations, who had acquired them at an earlier date. Indigenous garments of this kind are now worn only by old women. Beautifully decorated frocks, incorporating especially fine materials such as silk and coloured beads, can still be seen at regional folklore festivals.
