362-127<BR> Choker from Tesuque Pueblo; shells, brass and glass beads, leather; l. of shell panels: 21 cm., w. 2.5 cm.; ca. 1880.<BR> Chokers of hair pipe beads and shells with bead spacing were common among the Pueblo Indians. Shell was especially valued as it was rare, a natural material obtained through trade from the Pacific or Gulf of California coast. This choker consists mainly of Dentalium shells. Hair pipes in Pueblo jewelry testify to Plains influence (Jeancon 1931; Ford 1983:713,719).<BR> (Hovens 2008-09)
