Gold weight
An Akan-Asante folk tale explains how the leopard got its spots. There were once a fly and a leopard. Together they wanted to go in search of a woman to marry. Women devoted far more attention to the fly than the leopard. This enraged the leopard, and he tied the fly to a tree. Once the fly had been released the two animals came to blows. The fly tossed the leopard into the fire, which ended up covered in spots of soot as a result.
Until the introduction of coin currency in 1889, gold dust was used as currency among the Akan peoples of southern Ghana and Ivory Coast. Gold dust was weighed using copper or brass gold-weights.
Gold-weights were cast using the ‘lost-wax’ technique, in which a wax model was made that would later be melted by heating.
