Maron hut, 'Suriname' tentoonstelling (July 1962-Sept. 1963)

Voor meer informatie, zie het werkstuk: 'The role of material culture in the political awakening of Suriname: an analysis of Tropenmuseum collection number 2345', Alderson 2007.

-----------------

This photograph, taken at the 1962 Suriname exposition in the Tropenmuseum, shows a portion of the Maroon display. This hut is most likely the same one that was used in the 1953 exhibition (note the decorations and text above the entrance).

Eight years after the Landsregering Suriname brought their 'Suriname' exhibition to the Tropenmuseum, the Royal Tropical Institute organized its own version. Werner Joseph, one of the organizers of the 1953 exhibition, also worked on this one, collecting many of the objects used in this exhibition for the Tropenmuseum. He also took many of the photographs ultimately used in the exposition. Though it was organized in cooperation with the government of Suriname, the Tropenmuseum was ultimately responsible for the organization and selection of the objects.
[Excerpt from the paper: The role of material culture in the political awakening of Suriname: an analysis of Tropenmuseum collection number 2345', Alderson 2007.]

[J.Alderson 2007]
