In Shiva verenigen zich uitersten. Hij staat voor vernietiging en voor schepping. Hij is nu eens heftig en explosief, en dan weer de verstilde asceet die zich door niets en niemand laat afleiden. Hij zwerft soms lange perioden alleen rond door afgelegen streken. Of hij is in het gezelschap van demonische kobolden, gana’s, die ziektes en rijkdommen voortbrengen. Als Shiva’s zoon Ganesha is geboren maakt hij die tot heer der gana’s.<BR> De kosmische cyclus van ontstaan en vergaan, schepping en vernietiging, stabiliteit en bestaan wordt in zijn geheel vertegen-woordigd door Shiva. Hij wordt Mahadeva, de Grote God, genoemd. <BR> <BR> Shiva<BR> <BR> Shiva combines opposites. He stands for both destruction and creation. He can be raucous and explosive, but also a gentle ascetic whom no one and nothing can distract. He sometimes wanders alone through distant lands for long periods. Or he may choose the company of demonic goblins, ganas, who spread disease and create kingdoms. When Shiva’s son Ganesha is born he makes him lord of the ganas.<BR> <BR> The entire cosmic cycle of generation and decay, creation and destruction, stability and existence is represented by Shiva.
