Before paper was widely available, texts were inscribed on palm leaves. They are still used today, although they are not very suitable for coloured images. A palm leaf manuscript can be stored in a wooden box. Sometimes several texts are stored together in beautifully painted chests or cabinets. This box has gold flower and leaf motifs on a black background.
