During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the jiefang mao 解放帽 (liberation cap) became fashionable. It appeared after the army abolished military ranks in 1965, which resulted in every soldier/officer wearing this kind of green cap with a red star. It was a symbol of revolution as well as a mark of the red guards and rebels. The saying yi ke hongxing toushang dai, geming de hongqi gua liangbian 一顆紅星頭上戴，革命的紅旗掛兩邊 (a red star on the head, revolutionary flags on the sides) was the most popular slogan during this period of time. <BR> <BR> Hannah Li, April 2019
